Dr. Marshal Khant, DO, MPH

Bio

I was born and raised in India, where I experienced firsthand the challenges of living in an environment with limited access to clean water, nutritious food, and adequate healthcare. These early experiences fostered my passion for healthcare and public health, which was further solidified through my volunteer work with non-profit organizations and participation in medical mission trips over the years.

My family made the deliberate decision to immigrate to the United States in pursuit of a better quality of life and educational opportunities. I had the privilege of growing up in the greater Atlanta metro area and later pursued my undergraduate studies at Emory University. During this time, I benefited from unique resources such as access to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and exposure to global leaders like the Dalai Lama, shaping my perspective on health and community.

Medical and public health studies on the West Coast introduced me to the beauty of the outdoors and led me to my life partner, ultimately drawing me back to the Pacific Northwest. Osteopathic medical school deepened my understanding of holistic health, emphasizing the integration of mind, body, and spirit.

During my pediatric residency in Michigan and my pediatric emergency medicine fellowship in Minnesota, I worked closely with diverse communities, honing my ability to provide culturally sensitive care tailored to various dietary, genetic, and belief systems. My global health work in Kenya further reinforced my commitment to holistic and inclusive healthcare.

The COVID-19 pandemic paused many of these endeavors but allowed me to focus on developing specialized skills in wilderness medicine and pediatric ultrasound, particularly understanding how children’s unique physiology responds to different environmental challenges. My goal is to empower families to explore the world safely and equip them to navigate unforeseen challenges.

Today, I am excited to serve the community I now call home, striving to grow alongside it as a compassionate physician dedicated to delivering comprehensive care to children.

Sincerely,

Dr. Marshal Khant, DO

Education, Training, and Work Storyline

During my undergraduate studies at Emory University, I engaged in various enriching experiences, including working with Head Start through an AmeriCorps program, competing with Karma Bhangra—a traditional Indian dance team showcasing the culture of Punjab—studying abroad in Italy, and exploring diverse cultures and philosophies through coursework in religious studies.

After graduating, I had the privilege of shadowing, working, and conducting research alongside an osteopathic physician, an experience that inspired me to pursue admission to an osteopathic medical school.

I completed my medical education at Touro University California in the Bay Area, with clinical rotations in the New York region and other parts of the country. Concurrently, I earned a Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in community health, completing my field study internship through the Epidemiology Elective Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). My work included contributing to the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program and developing educational resources, such as a toolkit and coloring book on lead contamination in water, for the state of Michigan within the Division of Human Development and Disability.

During my pediatrics residency training in Detroit, Michigan, I earned a Certificate in Population Health and Health Equity from the University of Michigan and a Certificate in Pediatric Global Health from Wayne State University. My efforts included addressing food insecurity through task force initiatives and participating in a global health residency rotation in Mutomo, Kenya. There, I undertook hospital rotations, community outreach projects, and served as co-lead for the Kitui South County-wide Helping Babies Breathe 2nd Edition Provider Training Project, an initiative supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) [AAP Health Initiatives, Stories from the Field: Building capacity for Helping Babies Breathe 2nd Edition in Kitui County Kenya].

Following residency, I worked in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital of Michigan while my partner completed her Family Medicine residency in Detroit. This role deepened my understanding of emergency care and reaffirmed my commitment to becoming an emergency medicine physician. I subsequently matched into and completed fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, where I also participated in a specialized Pediatric Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training program.

I am a Wilderness Medical Society Fellow in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine candidate and plan to sit for the ASTMH CTropMed exam upon completing the University of Minnesota’s Clinical Tropical Medicine & Global Health Curriculum.
